The Lego Thread: MOCs and Builds of Note

Hey there, everyone!

Are you an AFOL who would like to share your hard work? Were you browsing flickr and happened to find some really cool original creation? Use this thread to post, receive feedback, and share in your love of the brick!

Both are great builds, well done. I've loved Legos since childhood and spent plenty of time building my own spaceships/vehicles and mechs/robots but truthfully I haven't delved much into creative building as an adult. I recently got the Ghostbusters set and then found the Milano & Escape from Knowhere sets from Guardians of the Galaxy on sale. I've got to get to a Lego store to get random bricks to play around with. There's that Exo Suit I wouldn't mind getting that looks like a fun one to let myself roam away from the intended build. Any suggestions on sets or sites to immerse myself in are appreciated.

Just a few to get you started:

• The Brothers Brick has been around for a long time, and has had a pretty good run of posting interesting MOCs with nice parts usage (NPU), solid techniques, and great composition.
• Eurobricks is one of the big LEGO fora out there, and outside of the "new set discussion" threads, also provides a lot of opportunities for folks to post MOCs, set reviews, and tips and techniques for builders.
• This guide to advanced building techniques is great for new builders and longtime builders alike. Though other SNOT techniques exist, this is a good set of instructions for how to get started.
• Finally, there's Bricklink, which is where wallets go to die, as it allows users to buy and sell LEGO by set, minifig, and especially parts, and is a must-use for a lot of really involved builds.

As for current sets to get back into building, here are my own recommendations:

• Any of the modulars, especially if you're getting into more advanced building styles.
• The Creator line is great for exploring different builds within the same set, as well as netting a bunch of parts. My strongest recommendation here would be the Blue Power Jet.
• Mixels are basically mecha parts bags. The builds themselves are fun, too, but man, do the new ball-and-socket joint parts really make building robots a lot easier. (See Big Blue above...)
• WALL-E has a lot going for it in terms of teaching techniques as you build, and the finished model is really solid.

I'd also take a crack at using the Exo-Suit parts to make some of Peter Reid's other stuff, as he's been at this for a long time and is the source of the original set posted to IDEAS.

I could go on, but don't want to overwhelm you with links. Hope this all helps!

As for current sets to get back into building, here are my own recommendations:

I second these suggestions, Blue Power Jet especially. If I may recommend a few myself, the recent Ferrari F40 is chock full of both surprising and interesting building techniques as well as a great selection of parts. I also have to mention the recent X-Wing release for its unique windscreen and great part selection, though the build itself is also very good. A lot of these are a bit expensive, so for great part selection and interesting use of SNOT on a budget, I would absolutely recommend checking out any $15 set from the Speed Champions line.

It is! Sand green is a recent favorite of mine, particularly when paired with bright light orange. It just works for me. I used it again in a repaint of Nick Trotta's Syzygy. (my picture is awful, apologies)

When I saw the first iteration of Nick's Cloudless 3v last year, I knew I wanted to make a ship with a similar cockpit arrangement. I especially liked how aggressive the cockpit looked, so what other way to compliment that than with a whole pile of guns?

Nick Trotta does some incredible stuff. And yeah, the color blocking on your repaint is tops! The orange canopy really ups the game, though I suppose if the sand green was swapped for one of the bleys, it'd be perfect for the Space Marine minifig from the collector's series a while back.

Also, what are you using for a lightbox? I have one of these, and, as you can tell...it's far from the best. (Granted, my camera sucks, too...)

Oh, and since we're doing a tiny bit of show and tell, I just wanted to highlight two of my faves from Aaron Williams: NED and Big Daddy, and his latest, REDHED. I seriously need to do a few studies of his builds...

I can totally see the space marine scheme rocking it out on the Syzygy, good eye!

Back when I took those pictures I just placed a black piece of poster board against a chair in my sun room while moving various boxes around until most of the glare was gone, haha. I learned how hard sand green is to photograph that day! A couple months back I purchased one of these and only used it for a couple glyos pictures so far, but am eager to try it out on some larger Lego builds. I'm also currently saving up for a new camera because my old one just isn't working that well anymore and I've been using my phone for pictures lately.

Gotta echo you with Aaron's bot builds, man. I love his Yeti with those delicious medium azure vents.
