The Glyos Connection

I have seen many pictures of the old Beanbot Glyos figures (not to mention that I OWN one), but have found little history about them. I'd really appreciate it if someone could explain what happened to the Beanbot and how it became the Phaseon.

Search the old OT forum. I think the molds were taken in by Onell once they were no longer produced by Beantown Toys.

I am a bit fuzzy on the history, but it goes something like:

While Matt Doughty and Marc Beaudette were birthing Onell, they were employees or contractors or something for Beantown Toys. Beantown's flagship product was the Beantown Bean. As I understand it, Marc did the graphic designs on them. Along the way, circa 2009, Matt used his Glyos pin concept to create a robot body for the beans, the Beanbot.

The head of a Beanbot (similar to the nozzle piece) actually fits inside a socket on the bottom of a Bean, thusly the 'bot becomes a chariot for the Bean. Beantown released some dozen carded Beanbots, which each included a color-matching bean.

Onell incorporated a few crossovers, releasing Onell-specific Beanbots (I can think of three colorways) which were mostly used as promo items. Eventually, Beantown Toys folded in some way or another, and released the Beanbot's design rights to Onell. Whereupon Matt tweaked the mold to create something that would blend into the Glyos System and created the Phaseon. This is when the nipple-head and blocky base-face-thing were lost to time. In exchange, the Phaseon head and torso-disc were introduced.

The history is very simple (and this is as accurate as I can recall)...Matt, Megan, & Marc all worked for Beantown and during that time, Matt designed the Beans and Beanbots. There was also prototype Beanpots and licensed Beans that were created, but, never released do to final approval/licensing. There was also plush Beans as well...I think those were production, but, not sure how long those lasted.

I have a plush bean around here somewhere. Never knew there were so many beanbots though. I kinda like the big bulky smily piece.

Huh. So that's where the Beanbots come from. I got one and never knew its origin. I always figured it was some sort of proto Phaseon.

The Spoon Racer is the first Glyos vehicle consisting of 4 Glyos compatible parts, the bowl, the handle, and two detachable wheels. While I don't own the bowl or handle, judging by the wheels, I want to say these were all hard plastic pieces.

The body of the racer is softer than the wheels. It is something like the hard PVC from the original Glyos figures.

The wheels of the Spoon Racer have also seen reuse in the Glyos universe as accessory packs from the General Phanost drop, and again with the Pappysoup Buildman. So I would think the molds for the body are still out there too.
