Onell May 2018 drop

From the blog post today:
Speaking of upcoming releases, our next one (late May) focuses on a pretty specific and somewhat obscure homage that some of you may be familiar with from when you were kids. It's a little outside the more popular 80's toylines, but does have some significant meaning behind the scenes over here, particularly in regard to the DSG design. I consider this coming wave a temporally displaced birthday gift to my much younger and less gray counterpart, playing under the bed somewhere in a permanent 1984. Be prepared for extra weirdness with this one, and of course, expect a couple surprises.

Man, there is so much to unpack in that statement!

Oh man, I'm going to start saving for this drop already. Any kind of old toyline homage is gonna be great, especially if it helped inspire the DSG.

Obscure homage... this is gonna be fun to speculate on. We could all probably come up with a thousand guesses and never get it, Matt is THE KING of Obscure Toy References. It could be a toyline or just one random oddball figure from nearly any toyline. Now I'm trying to think of weirdo Joe or Mask or whatever could influence the DSG. Any guesses?

Obscure toyline around 1984 that might inspire the DSG... this comes to mind. This is Mantech, which also had a swappable parts gimmick.

I had those when I was a kid.

It's gonna be interesting to see what he has in store for us.

Those are cool! Have one of the robots. It’s very DSG ish. Originally I was thinking Construx or Robotix or something along those lines. But the colors on those are mostly real type. Hmmmm.

Can you imagine if it had been The Centurions? :D

This week I received these bonus bits in an Onell order of build station parts: Image Doesn't match any of the recent yellows. I'm trying not to be tooo presumptuous here, but methinks it's a perfect match to that Mantech yellow boy...

From Matt in the blog post comments:
Though we love Mantech over here, this tribute is to something even more obscure and physically smaller in scale. It seems that folks growing up on the East Coast had more exposure to this foreign line than the rest of the country.

Oh goodness, Matt's responding to and hinting a lot this morning!

I know what it is. But I won't spoil the reveal.

Well between Instagram and the official Onell blog, the homage has been guessed and confirmed. Definitely out-obscured my knowledge! The tampos are pretty exact, and I'm looking forward to seeing how Matt has translated it into the Glyos line beyond the DSG.

The figures are mostly static but the playsets were heavy on building so it's a neat fit for Glyos. Much more limited nostalgia factor versus something like Adventure People but should be a really fun release :)

To be honest, I'd never even heard of Adventure People prior to the AP secret figs. The first of the secret AP figs was my second Glyos drop ever and I took a chance on it (and thought it was ugly. haha). I probably would have appreciated it more if there had been a sense of nostalgia for me.
That being said, ever since I've entered the Glyos realm I have had such an amazing education on toys that I previously had zero knowledge of. I love that. Even though I've never heard of this latest homage I'm really looking forward to seeing how Matt interprets it.

If there was ever a perfect drop to reintroduce vinyl, this would be it. I could totally see the Rig/Block coming back for this drop, considering the building aspect of the homage is focused on buildings and vehicles.

Unfortunately, Matt's already confirmed in the comments that vinyl won't be coming back this time. That being said, I wonder if we're about to get a lot of yellow (and some red) in the Buildstation on Tuesday.

Also, if we're going to see DSGs for the Star Force and Star Raiders, then what sculpt will represent the Cyborgs? Argenesis? Enyriun?

Huh, I just assumed it'd be black but yellow or red is intriguing.

And I was wrong; apparently, the big color of the wave will be metallic silver with a slight blue tinge. Intriguing!

Holy shit!! The Alienac Troopers look absolutely brilliant! I'm wondering what the underlying Glyan paint color will be- I've seen some theories that we'll see a sneaky Cane 2.0!

These Guardstar Commando's are pretty awesome as well!

Image

Matt mentioned that there would be...
some slightly sneaky additions to the Buildstation solid color options, albeit in conjunction with some character specific twists.

I wonder if we'll see a new Deep Space Glyan with the stealth dome similar to the Guardstar in the build station? Or if we will just be getting new stealth hubsets?

edit

Matt clarified
There will be one new white item added to the Buildstation tonight (it's a full Sarvos figure with Phanost and Scar Pheyden heads included).

The Guardstar and Alienac base bodies have no paint except for the helmet visors, so in effect they are right in line with the current Buildstation options, just in two more basic colors.

Wow!! This really breathes some fresh air into the DSG, I'm a huge fan of the paintapps and tampo for the head.

This particular homage really isn't flipping my switches, but that happens from time to time. Combine that with Glyans not being my favorite figure, it looks like I'll be able to load up on Buildstation stuff instead. :D

I feel totally the same. Never liked britains (about the only old space toys i dont own). Glyans arent my favorite and the 2 buildstation items i was gonna get this drop are gone already. :(

Oh well, more money for next drop

The Guardstar Commandos really click with me. They bring to mind most space themed figures from when I was a kid. They remind me more of Starcom or Air Raiders and I frikkin' loved those! :D
